Joshua 10

This chapter horrifies modern Christians, whose idea of God is one of ‘peace and light’ and cotton-wool ‘love’. How do they reconcile what happens here with their false idea of Who God is and what He demands? Would these people preach this Book as it is – or will they say it was written a long time ago and the same thing would not happen if ‘transferred’ to today?

They are similar to Quakers, for example, who say all war is sinful, so they become pacifists to get out of military involvement. They could not have done so in the days of Joshua! The command to obliterate every Canaanite came from God, and God elected Joshua to lead the new nation of Israel. This meant the ‘displacement’ by death of all pagans. Many miracles were executed during the relatively short period of this chapter and previous ones, proving God was with Israel. These confirmed to the people that Joshua was God’s leader, and so they obeyed.

Though against gratuitous violence and killing, I know that God demands the death penalty for murderers. Therefore, I uphold it and, if it came down to the barest of factors, I would make sure a murderer was put to death, as God demands. I would also make sure that groups of murderers did not readily capture me. Would I defend myself? Yes. Does this make me a backslidden Christian? No. it means I am a realist and obey God. I am fully aware of the distaste some will have for what I have just written. But, I know in my heart that I am being truthful and biblical.

I call upon all believers to think through this episode in the history of Israel, and apply its lessons to today, for what we are seeing worldwide is a murderous pagan uprising so phenomenal, it will cover all people with its violence. Is violence always wrong? No, it is not – we have to define the term properly, and in context. Is killing always wrong? No, it is not – God Himself defines its terms. He tells us that the deliberate murderer MUST be put to death, or the whole nation is guilty of the blood spilt. This is why the West is now bereft of God’s help – we suffer because of our laxity and sins. This chapter is a very serious indictment of our lives today.

Verses 1-4

  1. Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

  2. That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

  3. Wherefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

  4. Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

Adonizedek (adoni=lord; Adoni-zedek= “my lord is righteous”), king of Jerusalem, naturally heard of the defeat of Canaanite kings and the alliance made by the king of Gibeon. Gibeon was a royal city, wealthy, and more powerful than Ai. Now, it had lost its strength and was enslaved by Israel. (Note: At this time in history Jerusalem was not godly, but pagan and Canaanite; it was then known as Jebus – before that, Salem, whose king at the time of Abraham was a godly priest - and the inhabitants Jebusites).

Jerusalem/Jebus was the chief city of Canaan, and Adonizedek was both afraid and angry. He was particularly angry that the Gibeonites had formed an alliance with their captors. If these others fell so easily, nothing would stop Israel from taking more of Canaan. He sent envoys to Hoham (‘whom Jehovah impels’) king of Hebron (20 miles south of Jerusalem), king Piram (‘like a wild ass’) of Jarmuth (in the lowlands between Hebron and Lachish), Japhia (‘shining’) king of Lachish (means ‘invincible’; south of Jerusalem and fortified like the rest), and Debir (‘sanctuary’) king of Eglon, another lowland kingdom south of Jerusalem. These five kings were Amorites, hence their anger at Gibeon, another Amorite kingdom, for seeking friendship with their enemy.

Note that Canaan knew of the one true God, Jehovah, and at an earlier time, Jebus was ruled by a godly king-priest. The Amorites knew of God’s power and miraculous might. Yet, they thought that if they all gathered in great numbers, they could defeat the people of Jehovah! This is what is happening in our own day. But, instead of asking these Canaanite kings to join him in battle against Israel, Adonizedek said they would teach Gibeon a lesson because it betrayed Canaanite paganism, and joining Israel as slaves.

So, what we have are kingdoms living in fear of Israel and its God, and who also had a hatred for those who were beaten and forsaking their local gods. These pagans did not understand that their numbers, even if greater, were nothing compared to the direct fiat of God... one word and He could destroy them all, with or without a battle.

(We can be assured that their worship of false gods would not have been tolerated by Israel at that time: a sign of the strength of any country on earth. The West today is weakened and defeated by pagan gods boasted of by pagan worshippers, such as Muslims, and by homosexuals; our defeat is not because of superior numbers, but because of our refusal to elect sound leaders, and not being insistent on godliness in all things, giving us a tainted allegiance to the Lord).

Verses 5-8

  1. Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

  2. And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

  3. So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

  4. And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

“Went up” is an accurate way to put it, for these kings travelled north to combat Gibeon. Their armies massed in the valley before the mountain city and began to do battle. The terrified men of Gibeon sent a message to Joshua, who was on the other side of the mountain range to the East, seeking his immediate help. This reminds me of the current Islamic situation in the Middle East where those who do not wish to fight are killed by ISIS and other wicked murderers for not being as wicked as they are. As I maintain in our small church – this book is speaking to us about modern ills.

Joshua immediately took his army to meet the five kings and their armies. God assured Joshua of His presence, so he was not to be afraid. He also assured him that the Amorites were already dead men walking and beaten. None would survive the coming attack by Israel. God predetermines who will lose a war or battle. But, we have to have faith and do as commanded.

Important application for today – note what God said: “there shall not a man of them stand before thee.” All the enemy had to be put to death. We now have a number of murderous and wicked enemies. Can you not see how this chapter applies to them?

Verses 9-11

  1. Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.

  2. And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

  3. And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

Joshua’s men travelled during the night, skirting the mountains until they reached the valley before Gibeon. The armies of the five kings were ingloriously killed, to a man. Not because they dared to fight Joshua, but because they dared to vainly fight against God. Those who were not killed on the main battlefield were chased until each one was put to death.

The lot of those who ran was extreme – God rained down on them with giant hailstones, the weight and velocity of which made sure few of the enemy escaped. Indeed. We are told that more died from this God-sent storm than died by the sword.

This is another example of God’s way of working; we need not seek victory by our own means and strategies, for God already has the victory and will consume the enemy without our help.

(Note 1: Bethhoron: two towns in the mountains of Ephraim (Upper and Lower Beth-horon). Azekah: a town in the lowlands of what became Judah, showing how far the Israelites were willing to chase the enemy. Makkedah: a place not far from Beth-horon, with a number of large caves where the five kings hid from Joshua. Whilst our enemies are now proud and boasting, there is nowhere for them to hide from God’s wrath. Note 2: “great stones” were either ice hailstones or actual stones, large enough to kill on impact. The Hebrew word allows for either interpretation).

Verses 12-14

  1. Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

  2. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

  3. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

The huge hailstones were not the only helps from God. The Lord allowed the day to lengthen, so the Israelites could pursue the enemy for many hours in daylight. He spoke to Joshua, who shouted out the message to assembled elders and others: ‘Sun – stay as you are above Gibeon; Moon – stand still above the valley of Ajalon (‘field of deer’). Ajalon appears to be another city, possibly also under siege by the five kings. Note that the actual Sun and Moon were commanded to stand still; it was not just a request to extend daylight.

And so the Sun and Moon allowed Joshua’s forces to fight the Amorites until they were all beaten, according to God’s intervention on behalf of Israel and Gibeon. It is interesting that the writer of this chapter alludes to the “book of Jasher”. Jasher/yashar, is reference to a quality – righteousness, upright, correct. These qualities were found in poems collected by the priests and leaders as exemplifying what God’s people should be like.

We are unsure if this book of collected poems was written by one man named Jasher. Even so it was considered good and useful at that time, much as a commentary by a sound theologian may be held in respect. Fake Books of Jasher are published today, but they are not the same as the Book mentioned by Joshua.

The book was used by Joshua to show that this day was found recorded in Jasher. It does not replace God’s word, but serves to give further insight from a godly source. Other similarly non-biblical canon were referred to by the Hebrews (e.g Book of the Wars of the Lord, the Book of Samuel the Seer, the Book of Nathan the Prophet, the Book of Gad the Seer, and more)

In rapid succession, then, God showed the people of Israel, through observable and remarkable miracles, that Joshua was indeed chosen to be their proper leader, to be obeyed so long as he obeyed the Lord. Theologically, Joshua did not have this power within himself, but only insofar as God gave him utterance. The same is true of any effective preacher or teacher in our own day. Therefore, no modern teacher or preacher should be given praise for himself, for whatever good comes through him is of God, not himself.

Verses 15-21

  1. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

  2. But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.

  3. And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

  4. And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:

  5. And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.

  6. And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.

  7. And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

Joshua led his army back to Gilgal, where the elderly, infirm and young were camped, along with their flocks. Though the armies of the Amorites were killed the five kings vanished. They travelled to Makkedah and hid in a large cave in a small hill near the royal city. It has been identified as the modern village of Sumeil, about 2.5 miles from ancient Ekron. Soldiers came to Joshua and told him where the kings were hiding. He told them to roll great stones across the entrance, to imprison them. Sentries were to stand outside.

Furthermore, the army was to continue chasing the remnant of the Amorites, until they were all killed. Many Christians today have no stomach for the truth or for the side of God they do not wish to know about! But, I ask you this simple question... What would you do if, say, an Islamic force started to wipe out people in your country? Would you just sit down and, like an Islamist, say “It is God’s will (to die)”? Or, would you take up arms and fight them? Which option would be the better one? And would you resist fighting back because, somehow, it seems ‘less Christian’, even though you might die as a result?

If the latter, what is your view of WW2 where many Christians fought the oppressive and wicked German army under Hitler? Were they right to fight? If not, why do you think that? Going forward in time, to the present, what of Islamic jihadists who currently murder Westerners? Do you fight them, or do you just sit back and do nothing? Are there times when prayer must also be accompanied by action? These are serious questions that you should get right in your hearts and minds, before there is a need to acutely deal with them.

Canaan in the time of Joshua

Verses 22-25

  1. Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.

  2. And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

  3. And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

  4. And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

Joshua travelled south to the cave containing the five Amorite kings and ordered his soldiers to remove the big stones keeping them in. The kings were brought out, and Joshua commanded his captains to lay the kings down and put their feet on their necks, as a sign of the kings’ submission and the soldiers’ victory. The captains must have been apprehensive, but Joshua reassured them that what was about to happen was God’s will – a powerful symbol to all enemies that God would destroy them.

How many modern Christians have the stomach for this? To accept that God has hatred for certain people and will bring them down, violently if necessary? No, they prefer to think of God as “The baby Jesus, meek and mild”, who is only Love.

As Christians we might, at some point, have to use judicial violence against others. That is what soldiers do in the theatre of war, where an avowed enemy must be killed. There are times when an enemy of society must be shot dead by police, if he threatens more mayhem and death. And Christians must treat the enemies of God as their own enemies, and not as friends.

We must pray imprecatory prayers for these enemies to be removed from our presence, or even from this earth. Do you understand this? Or, are you willing for God’s and our enemies to grow and do us harm? In doing so we actually side with those God hates and show preference for sin. This can apply to enemies of our bodies as well as our spirits.

“... for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight” implies that enemies are to be fought (that is, with God’s prompting, bearing in mind that an enemy is an enemy, no matter what we think or say). There is also a corollary: that it is God who gains the victory. This can be by any means He sees fit – obliteration by miraculous mode, physical action through His people or through those in positions of security, etc., by personal response, which can be physical, verbal, or literary. Whatever the way used by God, it is His action and His end result.

Having said that, there are times when such an action is not chosen but put upon us, e.g. by a nation that declares war, forcing us to respond, or being attacked as we walk home. There are also times when an action is elective – such as when police have to physically arrest people who they know will use violence, and so a pre-emptive ‘strike’ is necessary. Much of this kind of action is conveniently forgotten or ignored by Christians who think our constant response should be ‘love’. Such are blinded by a delusion, or they have never come across the depravity and violence of many in society today. I have, so my thoughts are not empty.

Conversely, “against whom ye fight” can also imply choosing a non-violent path. Again, such a response must be initiated by God Himself. If this happens we can be assured that the reaction of the one who is our enemy will be predetermined by God, so that violence is not necessary. But, if some form of violence is required it must only be as necessary, as determined by God, and as is deemed suitable. (There is much more we can say about this subject, often hidden by Christians as if it were a kind of taboo, or an aspect of life too bad to talk about... though such an idea is in the mind of those who prefer to ‘skirt around’ certain subjects).

Verses 26&27

  1. And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

  2. And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.

After putting the enemy kings in physical positions of subjection, Joshua “smote them”, either personally or through others. When dead, the kings were hanged in five trees, where they stayed until sunset. The bodies were then removed from the trees and placed in the cave in which they had hidden. The cave was then blocked with large stones, as a memorial to wickedness and God’s judgment.

Verses 28-32

  1. And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

  2. Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

  3. And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.

  4. And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

  5. And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

If modern spineless Christians are honest, what happens next is even more horrifying to them than previous actions. Such observers tend to be unreal in their response to God and to the world. To think that what Joshua and the soldiers did to the whole of Canaan was prompted by God, is beyond their limits of understanding! They do not want to think of military victories or war; they only want ‘peace’ and ‘love’... both of which are grossly misunderstood and misapplied. As a Christian I hate violence and war, but I know they have to be instituted at times. Because God says so.

That day (after blocking up the cave at sunset) Joshua led his men into battle against Makkedah, which was close to the cave. The king was put to death and his body was dumped in his own city gate, and none of the inhabitants were allowed to live. This action was repeated several times elsewhere.

What this shows is the true heart of God against sin and those who commit it. The people of Canaan, to a man, were wicked and did wicked things. They knew of the one true God but ignored Him, doing despicable things amongst themselves. Most today do not understand this heart of God, preferring their ‘meek and mild’ version. If we all hated sin as God does, what a different world we would live in today!

Immediately after the victory at Makkedah, the Israelite army moved on to destroy Libnah, which was close by and Amorite. Once again, God gave the victory, though the army was used by Him to bring it about. And the city was destroyed; the king dumped at his city gate.

Next to be vanquished was Lachish. Israel camped before the walls and then proceeded to destroy the city on the second day of battle. In each place, God demanded the total destruction of the city, the people, and their king. Is this God YOUR God? He is certainly mine! His loathing for sin is absolute, giving no quarter or sympathy. At this time we may not be called by God to destroy whole cities, but our hatred for sin must be just as absolute.

Verses 33-37

  1. Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

  2. And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:

  3. And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

  4. And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

  5. And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.

Joshua and his army had already destroyed all the Canaanite cities they came across thus far. So, what was the king of Gezer thinking! Did he believe he was equal to, or better than, the Israelites, given their astounding victories so far? He and his army were also destroyed before the Israelites moved on to Eglon, a lowlands royal city south of Jerusalem. Very soon after making camp, the Israelites fought against the city and again won. All the inhabitants and the army were killed.

If we place this period into modern day history, it shows how much God hates pagans and their false gods, including their sexual depravity. Do you think God loves, or hates, Islam and Muslims? If we plot the battles in this Book, we have only one answer. God hates them. What do you think God would command a modern-day Joshua to do with them? (Look at what modern pagans do, against God, against His people, and against all societies).

Also look at the economic poverty of countries ruled by pagan religions; the poverty is a direct result of paganism. There is no comparison with countries founded on the laws of God and on the Gospel! See how western charities are all vying for money to help these pagan countries and their people. This should never be, for the leaders of these pagan countries and their people hate God and defy Him. The Christian life is far from easy on the mind and heart... and many tough conclusions must be reached.

Paganism has no place in countries that once claimed to be ‘Christian’. When it is allowed freedom, it ruins and abolishes God’s laws and godly life. It is why the West is almost lost, and its people are saturated with pagan dreams and desires. Homosexuality is a symptom of this paganism, and Islam is an example of paganism’s worst excesses. None of it should be given freedom for, in effect, we are telling God to remove Himself. One day soon He will destroy them all.

Do not, then, become comfortable with pagans of any kind, for to become a friend of a pagan is to defy God and reject His commands. There is only ONE reason we can befriend an individual pagan – and that is to preach the Gospel/witness to our faith. And even that must first be prompted by God. I can guarantee that all who currently befriend Muslims DO NOT witness to them of God and the Gospel! If they did, they would not keep their pagan ‘friend’ for long!

As it now stands, their friendships lead to a denial of God, and a silent acceptance of the paganism, making life far more difficult for genuine Christians, whose very lives are put in danger. Many voices try to bring us to befriend Muslims. DO NOT BE FOOLED. God hates EVERY pagan and their false religion, whether it is Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. Do not love what God hates! And, all other paganisms hate the others, such is their godlessness. Even Satan hates those who follow him.

Verses 38&39

  1. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:

  2. And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.

Joshua’s army then destroyed the royal mountainous city of Debir and its satellite cities, west of Hebron, along with its Amorite king (already hanged by Joshua at the cave he hid in). Nothing was left alive in all the places belonging to the Canaanites.

A reader might ask what is the difference between the actions by modern-day pagans of ISIS/other Muslims, and what Joshua did? To ask the question is to show ignorance of Who God is, and WHY He commanded all of Canaan to be put to death. The Islamists kill because they enjoy doing so, and because it is part of their pagan, godless religion formed by Satan. Joshua killed because God hated the paganisms of the day that filled Canaan with wickedness and filth. God demands and expects purity and truth. Pagans have neither. God demands worship of Himself only. Pagans worship false gods, even the most base of things, such as stones, trees and idols. If you cannot see the differences, then I suggest you repent of your ignorance, and pray to be removed from your spiritual blindness.

Verses 40-43

  1. So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.

  2. And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

  3. And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.

  4. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

So it was that Joshua battled against the Canaanites and won decisively. Mohammed fought for his own grandiose schemes of theft, killing both Jew and Christian, as well as fellow pagans, whereas Joshua eliminated all who warred against the one true God, on the command of that same Lord God. The series of battles and wars ranged from the very north to the very south, even to Goshen, north Egypt, and east to west. The battles took place in one time period, going from one to the other in quick succession, so that paganism could not slowly arise again to defeat the people of God.

When the battles against godless pagans were over, Joshua took his army back to Gilgal. Note again, that it was GOD Who demanded the battles were fought, and it was GOD Who commanded that all the pagans should be killed. Yet, to their shame, many Christians advocate general friendship with Muslims/others even though their religion is pagan and against God. How much longer will God tolerate such people? Will He not surely bring them down at some time, and wayward Christians with them?

We should note what is happening throughout the world at the time of writing. Islam is attempting to take over the whole earth. It keeps saying to the gullible that it is the “religion of peace”. But, western ears hear it differently. They falsely assume that Islam means its religion and Koran are inherently peaceful. This, however, is NOT what the statement means!

What Islam means is that once it has subdued all peoples, by the sword and force, THEN there will be ‘peace’! But, this kind of ‘peace’ is only another word for ‘subjection’, as practised by all forms of fascism. Under these regimes people are categorised. What categories?

There is the ‘top’ layer – those who are fully Islamic and follow the strictest sharia code, including brutal death for those who will not comply; then the middle layer – the majority who are Islamic and willing to obey; then there are the ‘filth’ of the earth – Christians, Jews and others who refuse to be subdued: these will be subdued at pain of death, or they must pay taxes to Islam, or they will be slaves, lower than animals and women.

THIS is what Islam calls ‘peace’... total rule by Islamists. Any who raise their voices against this, and who raise their heads above the parapet, will be killed. The ‘peace’ then is not peace, but brutal totalitarian dictatorship. Remember that even ‘moderates’ are part of this whole demonic structure. Thus, modern paganism is a remnant and type of what happened in Joshua’s day.

How different from the peace of God! Where true believers live there is always social and state peace. Yet, each is an individual person and may not fully agree with the others. What matters is salvation... none are beaten or killed for disagreeing. The rest can be ‘worked on’. But, it is personal conscience that wins the day, through the Holy Spirit. There is no killing of others, no enslavement, and no taxes! And when the world ends, we who are His will live in complete harmony under God: True peace. I ask again – can you really not see the difference between paganism and godliness?

Abraham took his family out of his home country and travelled hundreds of miles, at the behest of God. He was a spiritual descendant of Noah (all people are physical descendants of Noah). From his single family arose many sub-families, and these became tribes. These tribes became a nation, firstly called ‘Hebrews’ (‘strangers’), then Israelites. While God referred to these as His chosen people, only some were spiritual Israelites. Yet, all were expected to conform to God’s commands and laws.

What we have in Joshua et al, is an account of God’s commands to a specific people, the Israelites. As I have explained elsewhere, in the Old Testament we have things that pertain only to specific people for a specific time, and we also have things that pertain to all people for all of time (such as the Decalogue, because it is repeated in the New Testament). The command to kill all pagans in Canaan was an example of a specific command to a specific people at a given time. This is also an answer to homosexual atrocities.

Thus, today, we are not free to kill pagans and homosexuals UNLESS such killing is judicial and these people threaten our lives and well-being. (This is a very broad statement, with no details). Both groups threaten and kill us, so legal restraint, including death, is necessary (though not applied by godless leaders, placing us in grave danger). In godly terms, such enemies cannot be given freedom to act and must never be accepted into mainstream society.
