Many would say they are Christians, because they were either born in England, which was once known for its Christianity, or because they joined some church, or were christened and confirmed in the State church. But, they are wrong; it is not true. Some would say they made a decision to come to Christ by their own free-will, but this, too, is untrue, for no-one can be a Christian of their own accord.
To be a true Christian one has to be called by God Himself: they are called to deep repentance for their sins, and are born again by the Holy Spirit. No true Christian confesses to a priest or says the Rosary. He does not cross himself, believing that this has value, nor does he choose to wear a cross, as this is just idolatry. There is only one true Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, and He is the only One who can forgive sins. He is the only mediator between God and man.
A true Christian is a follower of Christ, and his life is owned by Jesus Christ Himself. It is not just something that is attached to one’s life, but it is totally the life of Christ in the soul/spirit. Christ Jesus is his and he belongs to Christ, Who paid the price on Calvary’s cross for his sins.
A true Christian has a heart for God and hates his own sins, though they were paid for fully when Christ died on the cross. He knows that Christ must be first in his life, and so loves to worship, obey and serve Him, and the life that he lives, he lives it in Christ. Anything less than that is just nominal Christianity, which does not save.
A true Christian is a Light in this dark world, and longs to be a witness to others, which is the greatest form of love, but so few want to hear. They love their sinful lives too much and only want to serve self. It also means that the true Christian loses his life, to find it in Christ.
So how can anyone become a true Christian? The Word of God says:
“Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.”
The Bible is the living word of God to a living soul, and the word becomes alive to him when the Holy Spirit regenerates him and he believes by faith. It is the greatest miracle of all. If there is no life in him, he will not hear the word in his heart and soul - it will be a dead letter to him.
The true Christian will know that he has been lost, but is now found.
John Newton wrote this well-known hymn:
“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me,
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind but now I see.“
Only a true Christian will know what this truly means. Lost in the world, in spiritual darkness, but now brought to know and see the Light, for Christ is that Light!
May these words touch your heart and stir you to seek out a Bible* and read it. A good place to start is John’s Gospel. Nothing else matters in this world, for the true Christian seeks us to come, and when he comes he knows he has eternal life.
