Isaiah 11

(Also, furthermore) a man would come from the family of Jesse (father of David), and others would arise from Himself (This statement allows us to see Christ as both the author and child of, Jesse). The spirit of Jehovah would be with Him. In this verse ‘spirit’ appears to mean the whole character of God, rather than the Holy Spirit. He would have all knowledge, all wisdom, all understanding, counsel and might, with fear of Jehovah. He will therefore act with holiness rather than with human faultiness. He will understand the poor and peaceful. And will speak against error and sin, and His word will deal righteously with the wicked. This can only apply to one Person – Jesus Christ.

Verses 5-8

5. “And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
6. The kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
7. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.”

He will be known for His righteousness and faithfulness, when He comes those animals which are normally voracious eaters of meat, shall be gentle and non-aggressive, led by a “little child”.. their voraciousness will be tamed by Hs presence. The animals will, at that time, live with each other, at peace. That is, He will reverse their tendencies brought about by sin, so they will become more like Himself.

Verses 9&10

9. “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
10. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an en sign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.”

Wherever the Lord is (everywhere) will strike all violence and hatred down. Everyone and everything will obey the Lord’s will, which will be upon everything. The peace and tranquility will affect every living creature – all evil will be stilled and be gone. This does not equate with a 1000 year reign. Rather, it speaks of a time when the people will be redeemed from Assyria.

Verses 11-16

11. “And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.
12. And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
13. The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.
14. But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.
15. And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.
16. And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.”

When the Lord comes with strength, He will again strengthen and bring-back the remainder of the people. They will be freed from every corner… Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar and Hamath, as well as from the many islands keeping them captive in the Mediterranean. All who were taken from Israel shall be freed to return. At that time, Ephraim and Judah shall unite again.

Together, in strength, they shall successfully oppose their enemies – Philistia, Edom, Moab and Ammon will all be beaten, though they have larger  armies. A similar success is being given right now to Israel, as it beats every foe with its army, rooted in Jehovah. Without this godliness they will fail.

Success will come to God’s people as they fight against the tongue of Egypt (both the delta region and the language), destroying the influence of that great kingdom. God will bring His might to bear upon the enemies, allowing His own people to travel over the Nile to freedom…. Again, as under Moses, walking on dry river bed and not mud. The few still left in Assyria (many by their own choice) will leave freely, just as the Hebrews left Egypt the first time.

Do you believe God can free you from your woes and enemies? Believe with a hint of doubt and freedom will not come at all.
