“So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.”
A while after the Flood, men (all descended from Noah) thought about building a ziggurat in an attempt to reach the sky. They wanted to be like God. But – see what happened! God was so displeased He brought calamity to all men, by giving them a different language! There were no translators, because every language was brand new, and so, unknown. It must have taken decades to sort out what each person was saying. All caused by a sinful desire to be god-like. God could not allow it to progress.
But, did you know that this kind of attempt was not the only one? Almost no-one knows that the Romans attempted to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem, after destroying it in 70 AD. At the time Titus, who led the Roman army against the false Christs tried his best to spare the most amazing building in the known world, shining as it did on its hilltop, the sun flashing off its gold-plated walls and white marble.
The Romans, probably using local labour, wanted to bring it back to life as a show of its own imperial splendour. But, after finding the foundations, they tried to start building, a few hundred years after its destruction. No sooner had they begun than severe thunder and lightning came down every day, stopping work. This continued for a while until the Romans finally gave up. The weather then improved.
God no longer had use for such a magnificent building. A temple was superfluous to His needs, because men no longer needed a centre for worship; instead, each saved man and woman could meet with God internally in their own hearts and minds.
Also, Christ had prophesied the end of the edifice, and the city, because of the wickedness of the Jews. Today, Jews are intent on again rebuilding the Temple… but, the original stood where the Muslim mosque now stands! Will God again stop it?
