“And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.”
Some folks get very defensive, if not irate, if anyone questions their idea of where the Garden of Eden was. In truth, all we can say, tentatively, is that it appears to have been roughly in the Middle East. We cannot be more certain.
But, they argue, we have the names of four mighty rivers. One went through Eden to water it. One ran around Ethiopia; one was east of Assyria. Another was named as Euphrates. Our good folks point to these and say they know where Eden was.
BUT – they forget that those rivers, though maybe named the same today, were obliterated by the Flood of Noah! Nothing stood where they once were. So, even if all those rivers are named today, it does not mean their location is the same as before the Flood. Yet, recent scientific technology has discovered a very deep river bed UNDER the sea… so maybe the biblical locations of the rivers will eventually be found.
For now, then, we can only approximate their locations by named countries. This technical information is not the reason for this Thread… which is to reassure Christians, that the text is factual. It is not invented to spin a yarn about a ‘mythical’ God and Garden. Over the years MANY sites of Biblical places have been found, so there is no reason to doubt that Eden existed, along with just two persons – Adam and Eve; one man and one woman.
They sinned and were cast out of Eden, but God showed mercy by letting them live for a while. ALL of Genesis is factual, so believe it (See my book – ‘How the World was Made’). Believe GOD – not human cynicism.
