“Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;”
I am often amused by the comments made by evolutionists and other atheists. One comment used often, with a smirk, is “If God made everything perfect, where do we get weeds from, and animals that kill other animals?”
The answer is given to us in God’s word! (But, because they think God is a mythical character, they don’t pay heed to what He says).
Both Adam and Eve suffered the consequences of disobeying the one warning given to them by God – not to eat of a particular tree. Eve led the way, and she persuaded Adam to commit what was a deadly sin. He listened to his wife and sinned, thereby not just losing intimacy with God, but, far worse, he brought the penalty for sin upon the entire creation, including ALL humans ever born throughout time.
From that moment everything, from animate to inanimate things, began to degenerate, from perfection to imperfection and death.
Plants and other food were contaminated by Adam’s sin. What God created perfect, now started to decline and show signs of imperfection. The term “bring forth” implies that the weeds (in this case thorns and thistles) simply sprang up to damage other plants. In this way imperfection was part of God’s punishment of Adam and all people after him. (By imperfection we include being conceived and born in sin).
What was once easy, now became filled with toil and sweat. And women can thank Eve’s sin for giving them trouble with conception and childbirth. This imperfection comes from the source: If A is bad, then so is everything following – B, C, D, etc. Eve was the “mother of all living”! So, her sin was ‘born into’ every human thereafter. Now, the presence of sin causes the whole universe to groan.
