“There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”
Many Christians, following the ignorance of atheists, claim that the ‘sons of men’ in verse 2 are also known as ‘giants’. They also say that the two terms are synonymous with fallen angels (demons). Hm.
Certainly, there were giants, and they are mentioned in other parts of the Bible. But, logic tells us that these giants and ‘sons of men’ cannot be fallen angels. (For more, see my article on giants).
It is true that one meaning for ‘sons of God’ CAN mean angels. But, this meaning is overwhelmed by the other meanings, all of which refer to human beings. For example, ‘children’, ‘people’, ‘members of a certain class of people’, etc.
However, note the sequence: In verse 1 we see that daughters were born to men. Then, verse 2 says that ‘sons of God’ saw the women and married them. Verse 3 says that God warned He would not always strive with man (humans). Then, in verse 4 we are told there were giants in the earth. And “After that” (after there were giants), the ‘sons of men’ became fathers and their sons became ‘mighty men’. God said that these ordinary men were wicked. The giants were simply large humans.
Now go to other texts, which tell us that in Heaven those who were human beings will be like angels, in that they will no longer be obsessed by sex and have sexual relations. He compares to angels, who have no sexual function. Therefore, how can angels marry and have children? The whole text speaks of men, not angels. As we see in the New Testament, angels are a different ‘species’ to men, so procreation is impossible!
