Atheists love to find what they think are errors in the Bible. In this text they enjoy saying that God makes evil. But, what nonsense! Do they really think Isaiah would make such a rudimentary mistake that says God makes evil (thereby making us free to sin because God created it)? Please – stop the insults to our intelligence!
Why listen to atheists concerning our faith and Bible? They have no idea what they are talking about, but they like to make uneducated Christians squirm!
So, did God create evil?
The problem is not in what God did or said, but in forcing the text into a modern kind of interpretation.
In our day we say “Look! It’s obvious – the verse says God created evil! End of story!” No, not quite… the critic is showing an inability to read scripture as it was written. As I have shown elsewhere, most words in scripture can have multiple possible meanings. With this in mind, what does the text mean?
Yes, ONE meaning for ‘create’ is to make from nothing (by God). But, the Hebrew word (bārā') also has other possible meanings. It is poor practice to just use a meaning that suits our own ideas! For example, ‘create’ can be translated as ‘to cut out’ or ‘separate’, or, to ‘cut down’ (as with a sword).
In other words, the true meaning is opposite to what is claimed by critics and those uneducated in God’s word!! Thus, instead of saying that God made (created) evil, we should say that He CUT IT DOWN. Very different! And it is not just my human opinion – it can be found in researching scripture properly.
Try, for example, the Gesenius Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon. Christians should never give-in to critics, especially when what they say does not make sense. It is not possible for God’s word to be mistaken or miswritten by God’s servants, but self-possessed ‘Christians’ can speak nonsense!
