“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
This is one of those magnificent texts of scripture, beautifully crafted by God. It tells us that in the beginning of Creation there was the Word, the logos. This can have one of a number of meanings, but here it means Christ, the Son. In Him is the complete form and nature of God. He was with God at His side, and yet He WAS God… “I was”.
The word ‘God’ is theos, the supreme deity in three Persons – what we call the Trinity.
Each holy Person has the same qualities and power, the same authority, and the same attributes. They are separate Persons and yet One. Can we explain it? No. We can only give approximate meanings, because it is beyond our human minds. Verse 2 tells us that the Word was God (the first, or the principle) in eternity.
Here it is confirmed that it was the Word (Christ), the One, Who created everything – no-one else had a hand in this. v4 adds that this same Word was life, and that He passes-on life to human beings, both physical and spiritual. This same light shone in darkness (of sin) without assistance or influence from anyone else. This neatly takes us back to the time God (Christ) created the light without any external source of illumination. This is apt, because Christ is eternal and lives in eternity, and only He is able to give light to a man to save him. Our clever sermons won’t do it!
Of course, men are conceived and born in sin, so until they receive the gift of being born again, they cannot know God. As v5 tells us, the “darkness comprehended it not”. Only those elect and saved will comprehend God and what He says. No arguing or lengthy encouragement will do it, because an unsaved man is incapable of knowing God. It takes the Word/Son to come to Him as Light, before he can see the truth.
