A review of the LGBT Strategy Paper 'Same sex Marriage: A strategic vision for all our families & relationships (issued July 2006)'

Same-Sex Marriage (SSM) is not the only goal of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBTs). In July 2006, in the United States, a manifesto was issued within the Gay community, calling for legal recognition and economic benefits for "diverse kinds of partnerships, households, kinship relationships and families". Its aim is transparent: "we hope to move beyond the narrow confines of marriage politics as they exist in the United States today". The manifesto further affirms that:"LGBT communities have ample reason to recognize that families and relationships know no borders and will never slot narrowly into a single existing template".

The intention is made even clearer from this further manifesto extract:

"Our vision is the creation of communities in which we are encouraged to explore the widest range of non-exploitive, non-abusive possibilities in love, gender, desire and sex – and in the creation of new forms of constructed families without fear that this searching will potentially forfeit for us our right to be honored and valued within our communities and in the wider world."

The political argument is that LGBT groups are just a part of a community spectrum that includes spinsters living together, heterosexual married couples and partnerships:

"The struggle for same-sex marriage rights is only one part of a larger effort to strengthen the security and stability of diverse households and families. LGBT communities have ample reason to recognize that families and relationships know no borders and will never slot narrowly into a single existing template".

Comment on Beyond Marriage Agenda

As many of you know, BTM have been saying all this for 25 years!!

Now it is coming about.

Governments must recognise that the campaign for Same Sex Marriage is just one strand of a greater goal: to make legal any kind of relationship, whether or not it is stable or temporary, including polygamy, polyamory, incest, paedophilia and other sexually incorporated behaviour currently criminal acts.

'Beyond Same-sex Marriage' demands acquiescence on the grounds of reducing homophobia. They are correct of course, as further demands for the law to fragment even rudimentary standards of morality for social cohesion and the protection of children, will indeed create disgust and revulsion. On August 15th 2006, the American Spectator, a leading conservative-movement magazine, commented: "This new coalition's one unifying characteristic would seem to be resentment aimed at people in conventional marriages."
